Local News goes Digital

For this broadcast meteorologist, her love for local news never ended, even after her career did. See how I rebranded her into a standalone digital weather company with the potential to expand the brand into other viewing markets and the local news sector.

This client needed a weather brand that did not include her name or likeness to comply with other contractual obligations. I developed “The Drop” brand. A modern, weather-first position that sets it apart from current local news and weather company branding. This industry is saturated with the colors red, blue, and gray, and dated graphics full of gradients and shadows. To set my client apart, we went with a flat, modern design, sans serif font, and a bold yellow-and-black color palette.

 

She wanted the ability to expand into local news in the future, so I developed “The News Drop,” a concept in which subscribers would receive a concise email “dropped” into their inboxes each morning containing the three biggest stories from their area. The email would end with a section called “The Good Drop,” leaving readers with one feel-good story, letting them finish reading on a good note. Making the news a little less sad to read. The concept could also be expanded to other revenue-generating platforms, like Substack, Patreon, or Discord.

When creating weather content specifically for social media, we encountered many unique challenges. Traditional weather graphic software costs thousands of dollars each year and produces horizontal graphics optimized for television. My client needed to produce vertical graphics for social media on a budget. I designed weather graphics aligned with “The Drop” branding, which were easy to edit in Canva, and were optimized for vertical forecast videos.
